A dead link, an error, a complaint, a question: here is how to write, and what helps get your message handled.

≈ 2 min readReading
In brief
  • Who it's for: anyone with a dead link, an error, a problem or a question to report.
  • Address: it appears after a very simple question, to keep it from being harvested by bots.
  • From an error page: the “Report this problem” button carries the address concerned over into your message.

Write to the author#

The address is protected against bots: displaying it requires JavaScript. Enable it to see the address.

Why write#

  • A dead link or a page that cannot be found: give the page where the link is and, if possible, the link itself.
  • An inaccurate fact, a figure to correct, a stronger source: quote the sentence concerned and, if you have one, the source.
  • A complaint or a removal request concerning a person or company mentioned: identify the entry and say what the problem is. The cases cited rely on public sources indicated in each entry.
  • A technical or accessibility problem: describe what you expected, what you got, and your browser or device.
  • A question or a suggestion about the content, with no further formality.

What helps to answer#

  • The address of the page concerned (copied from the address bar).
  • What you expected and what you noticed.
  • For a display problem: the browser and the device.

To find out what an error such as 404 or 503 means, the site's error pages explain the code and suggest what to do.

Why the address is hidden#

An address written in plain text on a page ends up within days in the lists of spam-sending bots. Here, it is written neither in the page content nor in plain text in the code: it is rebuilt after a simple question and a gesture from you. This filter keeps out harvesting bots; it does not claim to stop a sophisticated one.

Your data#

The page has no submit form: your message leaves from your mail client. The site keeps neither your address, nor your message, nor your answer to the question. This is a personal site: no response time is guaranteed.
